Introduction

The archipelago of the Azores, comprising the islands of São Miguel, Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico, Faial, Flores and Corvo has its own political-administrative system, based on its geographical, economical, social and cultural particularities, as well as on the autonomic aspirations which have been witnessed throughout History[1].

For this reason, the archipelago of the Azores is an Autonomous Region whose specific political-administrative regime is laid down in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic since 1974.

The Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores together with the Regional Government are the Region's Government Bodies[2].

As set out in article 11 of the Political-Administrative Statute of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, the Regional Legislative Assembly is the Region's representative and legislative body, which is also responsible for monitoring governmental actions.

The Assembly has political, legislative and regulatory responsibilities and it works, both as a Plenary that holds meetings, at least, during eight legislative periods per legislative session, and through Committees that hold meetings between each legislative period; they can hold extraordinary joint meetings, when justified.

The Assembly comprises 57 members who are elected, every 4 years (one legislative period), by universal , direct and secret vote, according to the proportional representation system and to the electoral law[3].

Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores represents the Azorean people, by defending the democratically expressed will of the citizens and by taking part in the exercise of the national political power[4].
